The Perfect Selfie

It was December 31, 9:30 pm at Moonlight Kitchen on Seminyak Beach, when the table next to us filled up with a group of young women. They couldn’t have been more than 20-25 by my educated guess. The place seemed a little out of place for their age group and crowd but there they were, two young ladies sitting down and immediately taking selfies.

About 15 minutes later, their friends showed up to make a group of five at the six-seat table. It was not long until the selfies were clicking away, we watched them pose like this, like that, and like that, and this again.

Fix the hair, touch up the makeup and tug a little on the top here, pull the skirt there and adjust the camera, light on light off; Oh my God. This went on until the waiter showed up and orders were placed. After ordering, the real fun and excitement began.

Smile!

Don’t get me wrong, neither I nor my brother were complaining. We sat back and watched the show. The funny part was that all the girls kinda somewhat looked the same. Just past the shoulder-length hair, full knit sort dresses and, and the same pale white skin tone. Seemed like a group of well-off girls from Jakarta on vacation in Bali for New Year’s. Nothing wrong with that I assume.

Now the girls stepped it up a bit as they posed by the railing with that looking-off-into-the-sunset attitude. I never get this…

Here I am looking into nowhere.

I am in random deep, deep, thought here… Quick take a pic.

The posing began now by the railings and at the table. Selfies, all the while not one freaking smile. Now I know smiles cause wrinkles, but come now, at least one. All the girls had the same damn pose.

I Am a Model.

It was at this time when the food had arrived. The fireworks had also stepped up a bit. The girls rushed around trying to catch the best and biggest fireworks for the background of the shot. Well, you know how this goes. Bang, bang, snap, snap, miss, miss and the show went on.

They must have snapped a hundred shots each by the time the night was done.

Still, no matter how hard they tried, they were not and will never be models, except in their imaginations. However, the effort that went into all this was so amazing. I do not know how they would sleep at night if none of the photos turned out as they had hoped. The mental anguish that the ladies must have suffered is beyond imagination, I am sure. Still, I am sorry ladies, no matter how hard you try, you will not be getting a modeling contract. However, I sure hope you get enough likes on your postings, so you don’t cry yourself to sleep on the first night of 2024.
