The Age of Addiction: When Hobbies Become Chores

Hey everyone, Zsolt here! Today, I want to talk about a topic that might hit close to home for some of us: the sneaky line between hobbies and habits. We’ve all been there – playing that one mobile game religiously, watching “just one more episode” of a show, or maybe (like me) getting sucked into the vortex of a long-term online game.

Now, there’s nothing wrong with enjoying a good game like Age of Empires (AE). It’s been around forever, offering both online and mobile versions. It has that RPG element, building your civilization, battling opponents, protecting your city – all the fun stuff! But here’s the catch: like many things, it can become a slow burn.

The Trap of Daily Logins.

Here’s my story. For years, AE was my go-to. Logging in daily, collecting coins, battling, protecting – the cycle continued. It was enjoyable at first, a strategic challenge. But somewhere along the line, things shifted. My son, bless his heart, asked a simple question: “Dad, why do you play this all the time?”

His innocent question hit me like a bolt of lightning. My honest answer? Habit. It became a daily chore, a mindless routine that stole precious time. While I wasn’t actively disliking it, the spark of enjoyment had dimmed.

The Wake-Up Call.

Comparing AE to writing blogs, composing music, or crafting poems, the difference was stark. Those activities fueled me creatively, leaving me with something tangible. AE, however, offered no such rewards. It was a closed loop, a cycle of clicks with no real takeaway.

That’s when I realized – I was wasting time. Time that could be spent on things that truly mattered, things that brought fulfillment and growth.

The Takeaway.

This isn’t a call to ditch all your games! It’s a call to awareness. Take a moment to honestly assess your hobbies. Are they enriching your life, or simply filling a void? Do they spark creativity, or just eat away at your time?

If you find yourself stuck in a similar rut, don’t be afraid to break free. There’s a whole world of fulfilling activities waiting to be explored. Remember, time is a precious resource, spend it wisely!

Let’s discuss! Have you ever found yourself caught in a similar situation? What did you do to break free? Share your experiences in the comments below!

Zsolt took some time off from his family business to write in Jakarta Indonesia for MD Entertainment. Having written dozens of soap operas and made for TV movies, in 2003 Zsolt returned to the family business once more. In 2018, he had the chance to head back to Asia once again. He took on the challenge to be the COO for MD Pictures and get back into the entertainment business. The entertainment business opened up the desire to write once more and the words began to flow onto the pages again. He decided to rewrite a book he began years ago. Organ House was reborn and is a fiction suspense novel while Scars is a young adult drama focused on life’s challenges. After the first two books, his desire to write not only became more challenging but enjoyable as well. After having several books completed he was convinced to publish them for your enjoyment. Zsolt does not tend to stay in one specific genre but tends to lean towards strong female leads and horror. Though he also has a few human interest books, he tends to write about whatever brews in his brain for a while.
