Canada, Censorship, and Access to Information.
Flies are being turned into animal feed! I wanted to share a link with my brother. I sent a link to my brother from a headline-type account on Instagram. It was an article on flies being bred in the USA. It was interesting and educational, not some sensational news about Trump, Tesla, or fake news of any kind. It was very interesting and valuable information.
However, it was blocked. Because this “NOW THIS” Instagram account falls under the news category that Canada is trying so hard to protect. In a nutshell, it is blocking free speech. However, here I am in a developing country, and all is accessible to the people here.
Bill C-18 in a nutshell!
Bill C-18, known as the Online News Act, is a Canadian legislative initiative aimed at establishing a fairer digital news marketplace. It mandates digital platforms to negotiate with and compensate Canadian news publishers for their content. Passed in 2022, the bill seeks to support the sustainability of the Canadian news industry. In response, Meta announced plans to block news content on its platforms for Canadian users rather than comply with the new compensation requirements.
Who are We protecting?
How about Canadian news publishers be treated like a business and not a baby? How about they survive on their own and create their social media sites in such ways that people want to consume the news and information from them.
How about all the advancement of AI we block out the fake news and sensationalism and use it for good? Yeah, no it isn’t happening it seems. So here I am in a developing country, and I can access all the information from around the world while Canada is being a dick by not allowing certain information to be shared on social media. Are we headed into a communist era or maybe a dictatorship and let the freaking government babysit us for “our own good” Hello no, this is bullshit.
Why did this even pass and why is this even an issue. Are we too stupid as a society? Are we not smart enough to figure things out on our own and do we need the governments to tell us what and how we can and cannot consume media?
This was the first time this has happened to me as far as trying to share information. Unfortunately, I believe it will not be the last. Things will be pushed further and further until only what the government wants to be shared will be shared. The future looks bleak.
