Tell Me What You Can Do

A Simple Approach to Problem Solving in Business and Life

In the world of business, especially manufacturing, challenges pop up all the time. Missing packaging materials, the wrong bolts, or a delay in the supply chain—it happens. One particular day, my supervisor came to me, clearly overwhelmed by a long list of things that were going wrong. There was a sense of panic in his voice as he rattled off everything that couldn’t be done.

I looked at him calmly and asked, “Okay, so tell me what you can do?”

He paused. The panic shifted to thinking. Then, he started listing the things that were still possible. With a simple question, he began to solve his own problem. It’s a small but powerful reminder that sometimes all you need is a shift in focus.

Focus on What’s Possible

When things go wrong, it’s easy to get stuck in the mindset of what’s not working. It happens all the time in business, and honestly, it happens in life too. But focusing on what’s out of your control won’t get you anywhere. By asking, “What can you do?” you force yourself to look at the possibilities instead of the limitations.

This shift isn’t just about calming down—it’s about being productive. Maybe you can’t finish a project because you’re waiting on a shipment, but there’s always something else you can work on. Maintenance, prep work, reviewing processes—there’s always a way to keep things moving.

Problem Solving and Leadership

This isn’t just a problem-solving technique, it’s also a leadership mindset. As a leader, the way you handle challenges sets the tone for your team. When you encourage people to focus on what they can do, you’re showing them that even in difficult situations, there’s always something within their control. It gives people ownership of the solution, not just the problem.

Whether it’s business or life, shifting your focus from the roadblocks to the open roads is a game changer. You stop dwelling on what’s broken and start thinking about how to keep going.

Life is Full of Roadblocks

It’s not just on the production line—this applies to life too. We all face situations where things aren’t going the way we hoped. Relationships, personal goals, unexpected setbacks—life can be unpredictable. But instead of letting those setbacks hold you back, ask yourself, “What can I do right now?”

It’s not always easy, but this shift can make all the difference. Whether you’re dealing with a tough business decision or a personal challenge, this simple mindset opens the door to new possibilities.

Wrap-Up

Next time you’re faced with a challenge, whether it’s at work or in your personal life, take a breath and ask, “What can I do?” It’s amazing how quickly you’ll start to find solutions once you focus on what’s within your control.

In both business and life, it’s not about avoiding problems. It’s about staying focused on the solutions you can create.
