Eco-Friendly Bliss with Stunning Views and Artisan Crafts

Picture yourself sipping coffee as the sun rises over emerald rice terraces, Mount Agung’s silhouette glowing in the distance. Sidemen Bali, a serene village in East Bali, feels like the Bali of old—untouched, authentic, and brimming with natural beauty. Far from the crowded beaches of Canggu, Sidemen offers eco-conscious travelers a chance to connect with nature and Balinese culture. Whether you’re Indonesian or exploring from afar, Sidemen’s sustainable vibe, jewelry-making workshops, and breathtaking sunrises and sunsets make it a must-visit. Here’s your guide to eco-travel in Sidemen.

1. Soak in Sunrises and Sunsets Amid Rice Terraces

Sidemen’s rice terraces are a postcard-worthy backdrop for sunrises and sunsets. Head to Bukit Cinta (Love Hill) at dawn for panoramic views of Mount Agung bathed in golden light. The early morning silence, broken only by birdsong, feels magical. For sunsets, visit Patal Kikian Villas’ infinity pool, where the sky turns orange over the valley. These spots are free or low-cost, perfect for eco-travelers who want to tread lightly while chasing unforgettable views.

  • Pro Tip: Arrive at Bukit Cinta by 5:30 AM to catch the sunrise. Bring a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated.
  • Cost: Bukit Cinta is free; Patal Kikian entry starts at 50,000 IDR for non-guests.

2. Craft Your Own Jewelry in Eco-Friendly Workshops

Sidemen is famous for its silversmithing, a craft passed down through generations. At workshops like Sidemen Silver or Agung Silver, you can create your own ring, pendant, or earrings using 7 grams of recycled silver. These 2-hour classes, held in traditional settings near the Yellow Bridge, teach you to melt, shape, and polish silver using age-old techniques. It’s a sustainable souvenir that supports local artisans and leaves a low environmental footprint.

  • Cost: Workshops start at 350,000 IDR, including 7 grams of silver.
  • Best Spot: Sidemen Silver (Banjar Dinas Dukuh) is highly rated for its warm, family-run vibe.
  • Tip: Book in advance via Seek Sophie or GetYourGuide, as slots fill up fast.

3. Embrace Eco-Adventures and Balinese Culture

Sidemen’s eco-friendly activities let you explore its natural beauty responsibly. Trek through rice fields with a local guide to learn about sustainable farming practices—expect to cross streams and spot farmers at work. For a cultural dive, visit a weaving workshop to see how sarongs are made or join a cooking class at Green Kitchen, using organic ingredients from local farms. Stay in bamboo eco-villas like Veluvana or Camaya, built with sustainable materials and offering stunning views of rice fields and Mount Agung.

  • Trekking Cost: Guided rice field treks start at 150,000 IDR per person.
  • Eco-Stay Cost: Veluvana starts at 1,500,000 IDR per night, including breakfast.
  • Cultural Tip: Try snake fruit (salak) at Sidemen’s morning market for 10,000 IDR per kilo.

Zsolt Zsemba

Zsolt Zsemba has worn many different hats. He has been an entrepreneur, and businessman for over 30 years. Living abroad has given him many amazing experiences in life and also sparked his imagination for writing. After moving to Canada from Hungary at the age of 10 and working in a family business for a large part of his life. The switch from manufacturing to writing came surprisingly easily for him. His passion for writing began at age 12, mostly writing poetry and short stories. In 1999, the chance came to write scripts. Zsolt took some time off from his family business to write in Jakarta Indonesia for MD Entertainment. Having written dozens of soap operas and made for TV movies, in 2003 Zsolt returned to the family business once more. In 2018, he had the chance to head back to Asia once again. He took on the challenge to be the COO for MD Pictures and get back into the entertainment business. The entertainment business opened up the desire to write once more and the words began to flow onto the pages again. He decided to rewrite a book he began years ago. Organ House was reborn and is a fiction suspense novel while Scars is a young adult drama focused on life’s challenges. After the first two books, his desire to write not only became more challenging but enjoyable as well. After having several books completed he was convinced to publish them for your enjoyment. Zsolt does not tend to stay in one specific genre but tends to lean towards strong female leads and horror. Though he also has a few human interest books, he tends to write about whatever brews in his brain for a while.
