Worked for The King!
Would you say I was exaggerating if I told you I worked for the King of Cambodia? Upon arriving I sent a text to my local host/assistant, and he replied,
“Welcome to the Kingdom!”
So, what can I say, this was legit. My driver picked me up and started telling me all the buildings and businesses this particular king owned. This is not a tall tale at all. When my friend contacted me and told me he was the CEO of Cambodian Broadcasting Systems, I was very surprised. When he told me that the king owned half the station and therefore it was part of the Cambodian Kingdom, I was really surprised. After he told me he wanted me to come and consult for him and the station I was excited! I was looking forward to the whole experience and felt weird that I would not be able to speak the local language.
Working for the Kingdom!
As I said before it’s not much of a tall tale and not a lie. I mean if the station is owned by the king, I can say I worked for the king right! Alright, so it’s not like I was the jester in the kingdom or a knight of any sort. I didn’t get to meet royalty or anything of the sort. I kind of wish I did but I guess I will save that for another trip. However, I was there as a consultant, therefore I have worked for the King of Cambodia, right? I am sure that in Britain many people could and have said that they worked for the King and Queen, right? Therefore, I am claiming that I have worked for the King!
What was it like?
So, I didn’t get to meet the king. I met some of his aides and of course my friend from Jakarta. Upon arrival, I noticed that the people were very timid, shy, and almost scared. Indonesians are not the bravest of the bunch, but this was even stranger. This was a mixed bag of feelings. Driving on the normal side of the road with the driver on the left and yet the whole place felt more reminiscent of Jakarta than Canada. The cars were a mix of American, exotic cars and a handful of Range Rovers, Bentleys,s and even a Rolls Royce. There were McLarens, Lamborghinis, and Porsches.
Where did I land? Where this was a mixed-up place? My hotel room felt like it belonged to the 70s. I had all these once high-tech buttons on the side of my bed, yet across the street was a massive casino and a 60-floor high gold building that my driver proudly pointed out. I was looking forward to the days to come and more will come for sure so stay tuned.
