From Behind the Screen to In Front of the Camera

Blogging Was Just the Beginning

The simple shift in my life came when I began blogging and realized that putting myself out there wasn’t the end of me. It was just the beginning. I took the next step and leaned into social media. That meant having the confidence to show my face on camera and open up a TikTok account.

Late to TikTok, But On Time for Me

Yep, here I was, very late in life, opening up a TikTok account. I decided to make content. Since I was already focused on interviewing people and businesses, I stuck with that theme. I started creating business-focused content that would not only help people but also benefit the businesses I interviewed.

Creating to Help, Not to Perform

I tried making content about social media, marketing, and simple things like Google Maps, creating webpages, and setting up Instagram accounts for small businesses. These were things that could help them tap into the world of social media.

Keep in mind, I wasn’t a social media expert. I was just a business person who believed most things are common sense. And in business, marketing is about visibility. That requires social media, ads, content. That’s the direction I was heading.

Facing the Camera (and the Fear)

This was all new to me. Putting my face, voice, thoughts, and expressions into a TikTok video was a huge leap. While I had an Instagram account, Facebook, and Twitter,(X) they were mostly private. I didn’t really do much with them.

Then I realized something: there’s a whole world out there waiting. And if you create it, people will watch.

Going Viral with an iPhone 7

And watch they did. My TikTok account blew up from zero to about seven or eight thousand followers in just a couple of days.

I was not ready for this. It was funny because I was still using an iPhone 7, and it was glitching constantly. The phone was already five or six years old when I started this journey. I remember trying to type and respond to thousands of comments on this tiny screen while the app kept crashing. But I stuck with it. For the longest time.

Eventually, it became unbearable. I upgraded to an iPhone 13 Pro Max, which I’m dictating this on right now. This phone has been a workhorse for content, TikTok Lives, Instagram, Facebook, X, and more.

Right Tools, Right Mindset

Having the right tools for the job made a big difference. I even invested in a proper microphone and started creating better content overall.

That’s when I realized something else. Putting yourself out there in a positive way isn’t as scary as people think. It’s just another form of communication. One where people can actually see you grow.
