Creating Good Employees: Part 2 – Empowering Through Clear Direction and Communication

Communication.

We discussed the importance of coaching over bossing in fostering a motivated workforce. Now, let’s delve into the key elements of effective coaching: clear direction and communication.

Myth Busting: Employees Want to Contribute

Many employers fall into the trap of assuming their staff is lazy or unmotivated. This simply isn’t true. When employees show apathy, it’s often a symptom of a larger problem – a lack of clear direction and unclear expectations.

You Hired Them for a Reason: Unlock Their Potential

Remember, you saw potential in the people you hired. It’s your responsibility to cultivate that potential. We’re all conditioned to believe in the value of work. People want to contribute and succeed. Why would anyone intentionally do a bad job?

The Root Cause: Unclear Expectations Breed Confusion

The answer to the “why’s” of employee performance often lies with leadership. Vague instructions and a lack of clear expectations leave staff confused and frustrated. This creates a breeding ground for mistakes, low morale, and ultimately, “bad” employees.

The Leader’s Role: Charting the Course

The key to transforming good employees into great ones lies in effective communication. You, as the leader, are the mapmaker, charting the course for success.

Clear and Concise Instructions: The Mission Brief

Imagine sending your team on a mission without a plan. Vague statements like “Give a presentation on X to impress the client” lack direction. Just like an army wouldn’t deploy soldiers without a strategy, clear instructions are essential.

Defining the Mission: Setting Goals and Expectations

The “very busy boss” often fails to grasp the importance of outlining the mission clearly. What’s the objective? What are the key points? Equipping your team with this knowledge gives them a sense of purpose and direction.

Breaking It Down: Actionable Steps and Inspiration

Armed with a clear mission and well-defined goals, your handpicked team can break out of meetings inspired and ready to tackle the task. Clear instructions combined with a motivated staff set the stage for a successful outcome, be it a presentation, project, or sales pitch.

The Takeaway: Communication is Key

Effective communication is the cornerstone of creating good employees. By providing clear direction, outlining goals, and fostering open communication, you empower your team, unlock their potential, and pave the way for a successful and motivated workforce.
