Run, wait and go!

Learning Goals

  • Practice past, present, and future tenses of common verbs
  • Improve spoken fluency through sentence building
  • Strengthen listening and comprehension skills

🟢 Warm-Up (10 minutes)

Question Prompt:
Let’s start easy.

“What did you do yesterday?”
“What are you doing today?”
“What will you do tomorrow?”

Let 3–4 students answer each. Gently correct tenses as needed.

🟡 Quick Verb Review (5 minutes)

Display this on screen or board:

VerbPastPresentFuture
runranrun/runswill run
waitwaitedwait/waitswill wait
gowentgo/goeswill go

Ask students to repeat after you with pronunciation.

Then quiz them:

  • “What’s the past of go?” → Went!
  • “How do I say this in the future: I ____ to school tomorrow?” → Will go!

🔵 Fill-in-the-Blank (15 minutes)

Read aloud and let students guess the missing words. Let them answer out loud as a group or call on individuals.

A. “Run” Practice

  1. Yesterday, I ______ to catch the bus. (ran)
  2. Every morning, she ______ in the park. (runs)
  3. Tomorrow, we ______ a 5K together. (will run)

B. “Wait” Practice

  1. He ______ in line for two hours last night. (waited)

  3. They ______ for the delivery guy tomorrow. (will wait)

C. “Go” Practice

  3. I ______ to Bali next month! (will go)

Ask follow-up questions to expand the discussion. For example:

“Why did you run yesterday?”
“Where will you go next month?”

🟣 Sentence Extension Game (15 minutes)

Start a sentence using one of the verbs and the students must extend it. Do 2–3 rounds.

Example:
You say: “Yesterday, I ran…”
Student adds: “…because I was late for school.”

Next student: “Today, I wait…”
Student adds: “…for my favorite TV show to start.”

Encourage creativity:

“Tomorrow, I will go…”
“…to the moon because Earth is too stressful.”

Have fun with it!

🔴 Mini Conversation Practice (10 minutes)

Ask questions using the three verbs and their different tenses. Let students answer in pairs or popcorn-style in class.

Examples:

  • “Have you ever run from something scary?”
  • “Do you usually wait for others or are you impatient?”
  • “Where will you go if you win the lottery?”

Follow up with: “Why?” or “Tell me more!”

Cool-Down & Recap (5 minutes)

Quick fire Q&A with students:

  • “Past of wait?”
  • “Future of go?”
  • “Present of run (he/she)?”

Wrap up with a fun question:

“What will you do right after this class ends?”
(“Run to the fridge!” is a totally acceptable answer.)

Zsolt Zsemba

Zsolt Zsemba has worn many different hats. He has been an entrepreneur, and businessman for over 30 years. Living abroad has given him many amazing experiences in life and also sparked his imagination for writing. After moving to Canada from Hungary at the age of 10 and working in a family business for a large part of his life. The switch from manufacturing to writing came surprisingly easily for him. His passion for writing began at age 12, mostly writing poetry and short stories. In 1999, the chance came to write scripts. Zsolt took some time off from his family business to write in Jakarta Indonesia for MD Entertainment. Having written dozens of soap operas and made for TV movies, in 2003 Zsolt returned to the family business once more. In 2018, he had the chance to head back to Asia once again. He took on the challenge to be the COO for MD Pictures and get back into the entertainment business. The entertainment business opened up the desire to write once more and the words began to flow onto the pages again. He decided to rewrite a book he began years ago. Organ House was reborn and is a fiction suspense novel while Scars is a young adult drama focused on life’s challenges. After the first two books, his desire to write not only became more challenging but enjoyable as well. After having several books completed he was convinced to publish them for your enjoyment. Zsolt does not tend to stay in one specific genre but tends to lean towards strong female leads and horror. Though he also has a few human interest books, he tends to write about whatever brews in his brain for a while.
