Amed Bali: The Timeless Charm of Old Bali with Jaw-Dropping Views

Imagine waking up to a fiery sunrise over the ocean, the sky painted in hues of orange and pink, in a place that feels like Bali before the crowds arrived. Amed Bali, a quiet fishing village on the island’s northeast coast, delivers exactly that. It’s the Bali of old—authentic, serene, and packed with views that’ll leave you speechless. Unlike the busy streets of Seminyak or Kuta, Amed offers a laid-back vibe, black sand beaches, and a glimpse into traditional Balinese life. Whether you’re Indonesian or a global traveler, here’s why Amed should be your next stop.

1. Chase Epic Sunrises and Sunsets at Sunset Point Amed

Amed’s east coast location makes it a prime spot for sunrises that’ll make you want to set your alarm. Head to Jemeluk Bay, where the sun climbs over the horizon, casting golden light across the water. For sunsets, Sunset Point Amed is a must-visit. Perched on a bluff overlooking Jemeluk Bay, this warung offers sweeping views of Mount Agung as the sky ignites in shades of orange and purple. Grab a cold Bintang, sit back, and soak in the magic. Arrive early to snag a table—trust me, it’s worth it.

  • Pro Tip: Visit Sunset Point Amed around 6 PM for the best views. Bring a camera for Instagram-worthy shots.
  • Cost: Drinks at Sunset Point start at 20,000 IDR.

2. Dive into Amed’s Underwater Wonders

Amed Bali is a haven for snorkelers and divers. The calm, clear waters are home to vibrant coral reefs and diverse marine life. Jemeluk Bay is perfect for snorkeling right off the shore—expect to see angelfish, turtles, and even seahorses. For a bucket-list experience, dive the USAT Liberty Shipwreck in nearby Tulamben, a WWII relic now covered in coral and teeming with fish. It’s accessible for beginners and pros alike, making Amed a top spot for underwater adventures.

  • Snorkeling Cost: Gear rental at Jemeluk Bay is around 50,000 IDR per day.
  • Dive Cost: A single dive at the Liberty Shipwreck starts at 400,000 IDR.
  • Best Time: April to October for clear waters and calm seas.

3. Experience Authentic Balinese Culture

Amed feels like stepping back in time. You’ll see fishermen in colorful jukung boats and locals crafting sea salt using traditional methods. Visit a salt-making workshop to learn the process and take home a unique souvenir. For a cultural fix, explore the nearby Tirta Gangga Water Palace, a 30-minute drive away, with its ornate pools and statues. Chat with locals at warungs like Warung Enak Amed for a taste of nasi goreng and stories about Balinese traditions.

  • Salt Workshop: Entry is around 50,000 IDR, including a small salt packet.
  • Tirta Gangga: Entry fee is 50,000 IDR. Bring cash for food stalls.
  • Food Tip: Try mie goreng at Rimba Cafe for 30,000 IDR—it’s a local favorite.
