What Makes You Happy

The True Meaning of Happiness

Forget money for a moment. We can argue its merits forever, but what truly brings you joy? What sparks that genuine happiness that money can’t buy?

For some, it’s the warmth of family and a loving partner. Others find solace in a furry companion or the quiet comfort of solitude. Often, the simplest things, the ones we take for granted, hold the greatest power to uplift our spirits.

For me, watching the sun dip below the horizon at the beach is a moment of pure bliss. Witnessing families playing on the sand or couples strolling hand-in-hand brings a sense of peace that settles over me. The fiery sunset casting long shadows ignites a creative spark, inspiring poems and stories that capture the day’s end.

But what about you?

Perhaps you find joy in that early morning walk before the world fully wakes. The crisp air invigorates you, even if cleaning up after your dog comes before that first cup of coffee. Maybe work itself brings you satisfaction. You might be a nurse, driven by the desire to help others, finding fulfillment beyond the paycheck. Or perhaps you’re a teacher, passionate about sharing knowledge and witnessing the spark of understanding in your students’ eyes. It might surprise you, but some teachers genuinely enjoy teaching! There are many who find immense satisfaction in passing on their wisdom.

So, what truly makes you tick?

The reason I ask is because, even in beautiful Bali, I encounter negativity. Some people seem to exist in a constant state of stress, their lives consumed by complaints and negativity that spills over onto others, whether through social media posts, their comments, or their overall demeanor.

Personally, I find random acts of kindness bring me immense joy. Paying for the person behind me at the gas station – the look of surprise on their face is priceless, and the cost? A mere $3 to fill their tank. Treating construction workers to ice cream on a hot day or, once, sharing a trucker’s dinner with my son in Orangeville – these experiences not only warm my heart but also create lasting memories and set a positive example.

So, what brings YOU joy? Share your experiences and let’s celebrate the simple things that make life truly meaningful.
