Chapter 10
The silence that followed their departure was heavy, thick with the unspoken weight of what had just transpired. Sienna and Rafa stood on the hillside, the cabin a silent witness to their defiance.
“They’ll be back,” Sienna said, her voice barely a whisper. “They won’t give up this easily.”
Rafa nodded, his gaze fixed on the winding road below. “We need to be prepared.”
They spent the next few hours securing the cabin, reinforcing the doors and windows, gathering supplies. The tension was palpable, a constant hum beneath the surface of their actions.
As night fell, they lit a fire, the flickering flames casting long shadows across the room. They sat in silence, each lost in their own thoughts, the crackling of the fire the only sound.
Suddenly, a twig snapped outside. Rafa was on his feet in an instant, his eyes scanning the darkness.
“They’re here,” he whispered.
They moved to the windows, peering out into the night. The headlights of several cars cut through the darkness, illuminating the path to the cabin.
“They brought reinforcements,” Sienna said, her voice tight.
Rafa nodded, his expression grim. “We need to move. Now.”
They slipped out the back door, disappearing into the dense forest. The sounds of their pursuers echoed through the trees, growing closer with each passing moment.
They ran, their feet pounding against the forest floor, their breaths coming in ragged gasps. The darkness was their ally, but it also made it difficult to navigate the treacherous terrain.
They reached a clearing, and Rafa stopped, his eyes scanning the area.
“We can’t outrun them,” he said. “We need to find a place to hide.”
They spotted a small cave hidden behind a waterfall. They slipped inside, the roar of the water masking their movements.
They waited, their hearts pounding in their chests, the sounds of their pursuers growing closer. The tension was unbearable, the silence broken only by the rushing water.
Finally, the sounds faded, and they knew they were safe for now.
