The Rain

This was rainy season, I was fully aware and this is why I was hoping we would not be having rain while I did this trek with Steve. But now it was raining. No, I guess it was a torrential downpour and that also meant that my rescue would be put off since no one in their right mind would ever attempt this journey in the rain.

I was happy to be in my own little world as I jotted down the details of the past few days.

This gave me time to reflect, reflect on the fact that Steve had been the Walter Mitty of friends. He had the balls to do, say, and make things happen in a way that only Steve could. He played crypto while I collected money in a piggy bank. He was in Bali, Thailand, and Vietnam before I knew where to search for it on Google Maps. Reflecting back, Steve was my alter ego. He did all the things I thought of doing but never did.

He took chances, and I took lessons. He made things happen and I waited for things to happen, he lived the dream while I chased it. Steve was Steve and I missed that. With Steve, we always knew that no matter what, Steve would find a way out of every situation. Unfortunately at that moment Steve was not here and I had to wonder, what would Steve do?

There was nothing to do but keep my pencil on the pages of my journal and keep the rhythm of the rain as my metronome. I have experienced rain, I have experienced much of this but mostly from a hotel or a villa. Never in the middle of the jungle in a wooden cabin.

I was expecting it to be hotter and now with the rain, it was getting quite stuffy. The surprising lack of mosquitoes also was great until now. I assume the suckers were also hiding from the rain. So much of my time was taken up by swatting at them. I was desperately trying to write down every detail of our journey. But this rain and pounding was getting to me in all honesty. It truly put my life in perspective. I have lived very little of my life. I guess that’s why I was friends with Steve. No, let me scratch that… I am friends with Steve.

Zsolt Zsemba

Zsolt Zsemba has worn many different hats. He has been an entrepreneur, and businessman for over 30 years. Living abroad has given him many amazing experiences in life and also sparked his imagination for writing. After moving to Canada from Hungary at the age of 10 and working in a family business for a large part of his life. The switch from manufacturing to writing came surprisingly easily for him. His passion for writing began at age 12, mostly writing poetry and short stories. In 1999, the chance came to write scripts. Zsolt took some time off from his family business to write in Jakarta Indonesia for MD Entertainment. Having written dozens of soap operas and made for TV movies, in 2003 Zsolt returned to the family business once more. In 2018, he had the chance to head back to Asia once again. He took on the challenge to be the COO for MD Pictures and get back into the entertainment business. The entertainment business opened up the desire to write once more and the words began to flow onto the pages again. He decided to rewrite a book he began years ago. Organ House was reborn and is a fiction suspense novel while Scars is a young adult drama focused on life’s challenges. After the first two books, his desire to write not only became more challenging but enjoyable as well. After having several books completed he was convinced to publish them for your enjoyment. Zsolt does not tend to stay in one specific genre but tends to lean towards strong female leads and horror. Though he also has a few human interest books, he tends to write about whatever brews in his brain for a while.
