Many People Think It’s Easy!
To everyone out there… It is never easy to find a job period. No matter what country you are in, no matter what you specialize in, jobs usually do not come knocking on your door. Job hunting and job searching are tasks that we all hate. Unless your family is loaded and you don’t need to work, most people have gone through the job-hunting process. If you want to get ahead you need to have your ducks in a row and your resume up to date.
That being said, I have seen some damn awful resumes and damn awful interviews. Not all but I would say 70% of all resumes suck. Yup, it’s a very professional term, most resumes suck! If your first approach sucks, most likely you will not get a callback or a reply. There are so many good resources out there for resume creation that there is no valid reason for your resume not to be up to par.
Resumes
Ladies and gentlemen and anything or anyone in between, we all have some friends or friends of friends in business. Before you confidently send off your crappy, incomplete or incoherent resume, make sure someone takes a look at it. Have a few friends read it, check it out and offer criticism and clarity. I know from my writing that sometimes I say things that I can’t even comprehend, and that is why most of my writing passes through an editor.
Can’t see the forest from the trees and that is a major problem.
As for me, my brain is much faster than my fingers and I jumble up all kinds of words. Dates, information and consistency in a resume is very important. Layout and easy-to-read resumes are the best. Unlike many companies out there, I never use AI to sort any. Instead,d I like to read them. I like to sort through and catch interesting characters in the process.
Who Are YOU?
I love to people-watch and reading a resume or many resumes is a boring task. I like to see something interesting and fun. Most people are willing to learn, most people are smart, so look for the interesting aspects and find the right person, nurture them and teach them.
A very qualified person with bad habits… No thanks, I’ll take a fresh graduate and teach them instead.
Of course, each job, like IT or marketing etc. are key roles and I am hiring you because I cannot or don’t want to do it. Yet at the same time, I would rather hire someone I see as a good fit over an asshole who is an expert. If you are applying for a job overseas, check the resume standards for the country you are applying to. In Canada, it is not the norm to attach your ID and your photo to a resume, just your accomplishments and experience. So before you go job hunting, do your research.
