Indonesian Literacy?
Oddly enough most big IP is taken from books. Yet most Indonesians do not read anything past getting out of school. Yet there are amazingly good writers out there. Lost in translation from book to movie because of budget or as mentioned before, the execution of the film is not on par. Sometimes it is X (Twitter) hype, and sometimes a good independent script is made into a movie by some caring, artistic individuals.
Most of the time the big-headed over-inflated egos of directors and producers manage to ruin the book anyway.
Yet there are nearly 300 million people here that need to be served up entertainment. Imagine if the movie industry was proportionally as good and as big as Hollywood!
Indowood?
It sounded much better in my head, I swear. So imagine if you invested today and the industry exploded by 20%. The screens increased by 30% and you invested today, rather than 5-10 years from now.
Aha, I Got You Now, Right?
The interest and investment time is today, not tomorrow. Will there be another COVID hit, yes there will, will there be stock market crashes and currency fluctuations, yes. Will there be business conducted under all of those circumstances? Hell yes, we know how to deal with most of these emergencies and we will recover.
So the people looking into investing and growing this industry are numerous. Where are they coming from? China, Korea, Singapore, and America. How do I know? I have talked with many and there is a growing interest in this amazingly diverse country called Indonesia.
As the country does its best to better itself, investors will flock. The currency fluctuations and political situation will always cause concern. As the literacy rate rises, as the population of Indonesia expands its horizons, better movies will be made. The movie industry is thriving and the consumer is demanding more.
Let’s hope for better movies, more investment into this sector of entertainment, and hope that we can reach all levels of Indonesians with good, well-thought-out, well written, and well produced movies.
