If You’re Not Working, You Should Be Learning

A Guide to Building Skills, don’t be lazy!

For many, the job search can feel like a waiting game, filled with uncertainty and downtime. However, if you’re not working, you should be learning. In today’s fast-moving world, skills are currency. The more you invest in yourself by learning new skills, the better your chances of landing the right job. This is particularly important in Indonesia’s competitive job market, especially within industries like hospitality, manufacturing, and IT.

Why Learning While Job Hunting Is Crucial

When you’re not tied down to a job, you have an invaluable asset: time. Beyond sending out résumés and attending interviews, investing your free time into skill-building will put you a step ahead of the competition. Employers are looking for candidates who have both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. With countless online resources available—many of them free—you can enhance your abilities in specific areas relevant to your career goals.

Let’s explore how to make the most of this time by learning online.

Maximizing Your Learning Potential

While the resources listed above are fantastic starting points, the key is consistency. Set learning goals, and track your progress. Even dedicating one hour a day to online learning can have a significant impact over time.

Tips for Success:

  1. Create a Learning Plan: Schedule time daily or weekly for online courses.
  2. Stay Focused: Don’t try to learn too many things at once. Start with one course and focus on mastering it.
  3. Practical Application: Whenever possible, apply what you learn. For example, if you’re learning coding, work on a small project to implement the skills.

Take Advantage of Your Time

Job hunting is stressful, but you can take control by learning new skills. Every course, certification, or project you complete during your downtime builds your résumé and makes you a more attractive candidate. It also shows prospective employers that you are proactive, dedicated, and invested in your own professional development.

In Indonesia, the opportunities to grow in hospitality, manufacturing, and IT are endless. By dedicating time to learning, you’ll not only increase your chances of landing a job but also boost your confidence and capability in your chosen field.

Zsolt Zsemba

Zsolt Zsemba has worn many different hats. He has been an entrepreneur, and businessman for over 30 years. Living abroad has given him many amazing experiences in life and also sparked his imagination for writing. After moving to Canada from Hungary at the age of 10 and working in a family business for a large part of his life. The switch from manufacturing to writing came surprisingly easily for him. His passion for writing began at age 12, mostly writing poetry and short stories. In 1999, the chance came to write scripts. Zsolt took some time off from his family business to write in Jakarta Indonesia for MD Entertainment. Having written dozens of soap operas and made for TV movies, in 2003 Zsolt returned to the family business once more. In 2018, he had the chance to head back to Asia once again. He took on the challenge to be the COO for MD Pictures and get back into the entertainment business. The entertainment business opened up the desire to write once more and the words began to flow onto the pages again. He decided to rewrite a book he began years ago. Organ House was reborn and is a fiction suspense novel while Scars is a young adult drama focused on life’s challenges. After the first two books, his desire to write not only became more challenging but enjoyable as well. After having several books completed he was convinced to publish them for your enjoyment. Zsolt does not tend to stay in one specific genre but tends to lean towards strong female leads and horror. Though he also has a few human interest books, he tends to write about whatever brews in his brain for a while.
