Canadian Immigration: Back Then and Now
Back then, my aunt and uncle had to sign documents guaranteeing they wouldn’t be a burden on Canada for ten years. Oh, how things have changed.
When my parents and I immigrated to Canada, it was a planned escape from communist Hungary. My parents’ dream was to escape communist rule and give their children and family a better life. Here are some key goals we sought:
- Escape constant communist control.
- Build a better future for the family.
- Enjoy freedom of religion, thought, and speech.
Many immigrants came to Canada for these reasons. They aimed to start businesses and build a brighter, less oppressive future. Back then, there were amazing opportunities to do just that. We all had amazing opportunities to start businesses and work hard for a better future. Goals could be achieved, and were achieved.
But Wait, There’s More
Back then, yes, my aunt and uncle, and we ourselves, signed documents promising not to rely on welfare for ten years. It was a way for Canada to vet newcomers and ensure they were responsible individuals.
We Were Good Individuals
We never had any issues with the law, never got in trouble, and paid our taxes. We even started and grew a business, one of the largest furniture companies in Canada. We employed and helped thousands of people over nearly 40 years of business.
There were hard times and then some very hard times. But we made it through, and never once to this day did we rely on the government.
A Changing Canada
But look at Canada today. Canada will never be the Canada of old, where people are proud to be Canadian. Today, the economy and the actions of entitled and very misguided individuals are choking Canada to the point of destruction. Why can’t people understand that sacrifices need to be made and we cannot all have our way?
A Fear of Repetition
Canada is turning into a communist regime that my parents escaped from. It saddens me to think that, as a once proud Canadian living in Canada, I am having to write such a sad story about my country. Good luck to us all, and may all the idiotic ideas of the current government be damned.
