- Ask: “What’s something funny or strange you’ve heard in English?”
Idioms:
- Break a leg – good luck
- Under the weather – feeling sick
- In hot water – in trouble
- Hit the nail on the head – exactly right
- The last straw – final problem before losing patience
Acronyms:
- OMG – Oh My God
“OMG! That movie was amazing!” - IDK – I Don’t Know
“IDK what to wear to the party.” - FYI – For Your Information
“FYI, class starts at 8 a.m.” - IMO / IMHO – In My Opinion / In My Humble Opinion
“IMO, the red shirt looks better.” - TMI – Too Much Information
“Ew, TMI! I didn’t need to hear that.” - AKA – Also Known As
“Superman, aka Clark Kent, saved the day.” - FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions
“Check the FAQ section on the website.” - BFF – Best Friends Forever
“She’s my BFF since grade school.” - ICYMI – In Case You Missed It

20–35 min: Sentence Extension Game
Goal: Turn short phrases into full, real-life sentences.
- Give each student one idiom and one acronym.
- Ask them to extend each into a complete sentence.
✍️ Example:
- TGIF: “TGIF! I’ve had such a busy week, I’m going to relax this weekend.”
- Break a leg: “Break a leg on your presentation today, you’ll do great!”
🧠 Then, ask: “Can you make the sentence longer with more detail?”
Make Your Own Acronym!
- Students invent 1 new acronym of their own.
- Say what it stands for (e.g. FOMO = Fear Of Missing Out)
- Make a sentence using it
