Bali Waste!

Statistics and Necessary Solutions

Bali, the island famous for its natural beauty and culture, is currently facing a serious waste crisis. According to data from the Bali Provincial Environmental and Sanitation Agency, in 2021, Bali produced 4,200 tons of waste per day. Of that amount, only about 60% is properly managed, while the rest ends up in rivers, beaches, and illegal dumpsites. Despite the locals burning tons of garbage per day on their own.

Bali’s waste problem not only affects the environment but also public health. Accumulated waste can become a breeding ground for diseases such as dengue fever, malaria, and diarrhea. Additionally, waste discharged into rivers and beaches can contaminate water and disrupt marine ecosystems.

To overcome the waste crisis in Bali, serious efforts are needed from the government, the public, and the business community. The government needs to strengthen the waste management system by building more integrated waste disposal sites (TPSTs) and raising public awareness about the importance of disposing of waste properly.

The Locals

The Balinese community also needs to change its habit of littering. Organic waste should be processed into compost, while inorganic waste should be sorted and recycled. Waste banks and sorting collection points can be a means to facilitate the community in disposing of waste properly.

The business community also has an important role in addressing the waste crisis in Bali. Companies can reduce waste production by using environmentally friendly materials and implementing recycling systems in the workplace. Additionally, companies can also support waste management programs carried out by the government and the community.
