Part 3: Community Tensions

As Vlad’s plans grew, so did the tension between his fortress and the idyllic community around it. While his family endeared themselves to the locals, Vlad remained distant, focused on what lay ahead. His reluctance to engage in village customs bred intrigue and suspicion.

His compound began to take on the appearance of a secure bunker. Security cameras dotted the perimeter, their lenses glinting ominously in the sunlight. Unmanned drones occasionally buzzed overhead, surveying the compound’s boundaries. These were not the actions of a man enjoying a peaceful retirement; these were the moves of someone preparing for war.

Village elders approached his wives with curiosity. “What is he building?” they asked over tea and shared meals. But Vlad’s family had learned to answer carefully. “A home,” they’d say with smiles. In truth, Vlad had no intention of relying on the goodwill of the locals. In his mind, the compound had to be self-sustaining—immune to outside interference.

His assistant, ever discreet, became the bridge between Vlad’s ambition and the curious onlookers. She placated local workers who marveled at the underground chambers being dug and reassured the occasional police officer who wondered if everything was above board. “He’s just a rich man with a strange hobby,” she’d say, disarming them with charm.

But hobbyists didn’t install emergency bunkers or stockpile supplies for a small army. Vlad’s true purpose was becoming harder to hide.
