Career Changes Part 7

Do More… Learn more.

I would not say I was handed a new position but I was transitioned into it. Or I could say it was this new role or go home. I didn’t want to go home because I love Indonesia. It was time to learn and do more in the new role.

I was handed our struggling book publishing company and a film studio to run. In the middle of the pandemic when the malls were closed, gatherings were forbidden and I am to sell books and manage the rental space for a studio where no one could come to. I was up for challenges but was this biting off more than I could chew?

In the Meantime,… I was writing!

Being involved in the creative aspects of the movie business sparked me to write again. During all the time I was at the new position in Jakarta, before and during the pandemic I wrote. I wrote nearly every minute I had a chance. Weekends, evenings and when I had time during the work from home part of the pandemic.

I was inspired and bitten by a crazy bug to write. Up to now, 12 books/novels are completed and edited thanks to Janet, my editor. Janet encouraged me during the pandemic to get the books out there and at least put them online. There is a saying in Hungarian.

In everything good, there is something bad and in everything bad, there is something good.

How much good came out of the pandemic for the average person… I have no idea, most likely more bad than good. But for me, there was an upside and that was my love for writing, good or bad, you be the judge… But this was positive for me.

The new Roles. Expand Your Mind.

This was another entry into my quickly expanding resume. I ran a studio and a book publishing company. Before you ask, no, I didn’t publish anything under the publishing company I was running. That would have been a conflict of interest and I would have been fired for that.

The new role was an excellent way for me to learn the world of editing, layouts, cover design, printing requirements and distribution of books. The other big aspect of this was the whole world of marketing, advertising and the book lovers’ wants and needs.

The one big role I had to play was to bring this company out of a huge debt that it had amassed since 2017. The long and short of it is that we made the company profitable in 9 months. The studio struggled because of the on and off again restrictions. There was little one could do because when bookings are cancelled to COVID there was not much anyone could do. Needless to say, the studio KPI was not met.

Seeking new opportunities. Never stop learning.

I was not one to change jobs often. Heck, I never wanted to change jobs but such was life. As one recruiter told me.

You will change jobs quite often before you can settle down, you know too much

I didn’t know what she meant at the time until years later. People are afraid, companies are afraid to hire you because you were in their shoes. They are intimidated by the possible knowledge you have. This does not make sense; I couldn’t make sense of it. It was much later when it began to make sense to me. When this also happened to my brother we began to understand. While I was happy at the studio, I decided I needed to work in Bali. Forget Jakarta, my end goal was always to live and work in Bali so I began looking.

Zsolt Zsemba has worn many different hats. He has been an entrepreneur, and businessman for over 30 years. Living abroad has given him many amazing experiences in life and also sparked his imagination for writing. After moving to Canada from Hungary at the age of 10 and working in a family business for a large part of his life. The switch from manufacturing to writing came surprisingly easily for him. His passion for writing began at age 12, mostly writing poetry and short stories. In 1999, the chance came to write scripts. Zsolt took some time off from his family business to write in Jakarta Indonesia for MD Entertainment. Having written dozens of soap operas and made for TV movies, in 2003 Zsolt returned to the family business once more. In 2018, he had the chance to head back to Asia once again. He took on the challenge to be the COO for MD Pictures and get back into the entertainment business. The entertainment business opened up the desire to write once more and the words began to flow onto the pages again. He decided to rewrite a book he began years ago. Organ House was reborn and is a fiction suspense novel while Scars is a young adult drama focused on life’s challenges. After the first two books, his desire to write not only became more challenging but enjoyable as well. After having several books completed he was convinced to publish them for your enjoyment. Zsolt does not tend to stay in one specific genre but tends to lean towards strong female leads and horror. Though he also has a few human interest books, he tends to write about whatever brews in his brain for a while.
