How I became a writer… Part 4
Writer’s block. We hear it often. I am stuck, I don’t know what to write and I don’t know where to go with this character and so on. The trick I learned from Larry in Connecticut is to not stop writing. But you have nothing, your mind is blank…
I have nothing, my mind is blank.

Write what is on your mind said “Larry” write down the fact that you have nothing on your mind and that you are stuck. Put it on paper that your character Joe is dead in your head, he cannot seem to find a way to kill the dog next door without getting caught.
Larry said that no matter what you write, you write. It is all because you are now at work in the office. Your office could be a coffee shop, your bedroom, your kitchen table. Do your job or you will be fired. In part three I mentioned that Larry needed to get dressed to go to work because it is the only way he could write. Writing was his job.

So, write because you are your own worst enemy. Write because then you cannot say you had writer’s block.
You may not like what you wrote but at least you were not blocked.
This was what worked for Larry and, to be honest, it also works for me. You will think about this and say, “But my problem is different”. No, your problem is that you are stuck, your mind needs a kick in the ass to get your fingers moving.
Write, because you are a “writer”. Write because you are an author, a poet, a blogger, a scriptwriter, a journalist or whatever you want to call yourself. Content is needed, content does not create itself so get your ass in gear and get ready to go to work.
Those few weeks of phone calls and chats with Larry were well worth it and the advice he gave me I still remember very well. As a writer, you are no different than the person on the assembly line. You have a job to do and while you do not have a line of cars to assemble, you must link the story together so it works. The cars are the words, the words are the machine that drives you. Sometimes the car may not start but it can be fixed. Much the same applies to the words and thoughts that come out of your head.
You may not like them… That is why you need to edit or have an editor make sense of it all for you.
Speaking of which, my editor…
